The Negroni – The Chicest Cocktail You’ll Ever Meet

The Negroni, a one-stop step to gaiety in a single, short glass. First introduced to me by my boyfriend four years ago, it’s been my tipple of choice ever since. Legend has it that the drink was invented in Florence, in 1919, for Count Camillo Negroni, who requested that his normal cocktail, the Americano, be fortified with something stronger. The bartender added gin and the negroni was born. I insisted on serving these at my 21st birthday party and quickly learned that the potent mix of gin, Campari and vermouth wasn’t to everyones taste. For me though, nothing beats it’s medicinal and musty warmth but it wasn’t until I began mixing my own this Christmas that I realised just how tricksy this drink can be.

All the components have to be exactly equal and you absolutely cannot forgo the orange rind, the citrus oils really enhance the components of the drink. A traditional Negroni is perfect during the colder months but in the summer, I prefer to keep it light with a ‘Spagliato’ alternative. With this, the gin is replaced with Prosecco, making it a refreshing sundowner and an ever so casual reference to  how chic you are. Now all we need are another six months for it to actually be warm enough…Anyone else suffering from extreme post holiday anxiety?
