How Now, Good Brows? (and lashes)

There’s a time and a place for mascara. That time is night and the place is usually only reachable via Uber, because if I’m wearing mascara, I’m probably also wearing shoes that aren’t suitable for lengthy standing periods. Despite my aversion to eye make up by day, the truth is that I look like Voldemort squinting in a snowstorm without it. (See below).

When your genetically damned with smallish eyes that are regrettably flanked by obstinate eye-bags, having strong lash and brow game is essential. This is all jolly well and attainable if you’re a competent makeup enthusiast or say, a beauty blogger, but personally, 7am is NOT the time to be penciling my brows in just-so. There are some things that are best left to the professionals, and that professional is Suman Jalaf, who will transform your eyes from beady to Bambi in the subtlest yet most arresting of fashions.

Pre Suman, my eye maintenance consisted of a biannual trip to Blink Bar for an adhoc thread-job interspersed with unsolicited plucking from my perfectly-arched mother. The first time Suman peered at my face, she knew what had to be done and I gave her free reign of everything above the nose. There’s something very calming about Suman that makes you trust her instantly, so much so, you won’t even need to tell her what you want..because chances are she already knows.

Here’s what happened:

  • Brows were threaded
  • Lashes were lifted – the equivalent of a semi-permanent and intense session with your Shu Uemura eyelash curlers that last up to 6 weeks
  • Followed by an eyelash tint in midnight blue
  • And finally an eyebrow tint and tidy

Suman’s general philosophy is that bolder and more grown-in is better, as fuller brows tend to make people look younger (and vice versa). Our natural eye/eyebrow geography dictates ideal fullness and that our eyelids should determine how full our brows can be. Having full brows is NOT more important than having a flattering fullness.

WORD to a sista, Suman.

Another reason why Suman is so exciting is because she’s one of the only practitioners in London trained in eyebrow extensions. Yep, that’s right. Teeny tiny feathers are attached to the brows using a non-toxic glue and are perfect for building up gaps in the brow or for adding density to an already decent pair. Completely invisible, they last between 2-3 weeks providing you don’t cleanse too boisterously or rub them off at your desk or whatever.

Fast forward a fortnight and I’m still not wearing mascara to work, I go to bed feeling prettier and I haven’t wielded anything pointed or sharp near my eyeballs since. I initially thought that full facial fauna was a trend as fleeting as a box of cupcakes in an office kitchenette, but how wrong, how ARROGANT I was… That is, until Suman came along.

So if your eyes seek formidable frames constructed within the comforts of your own home, Suman is your girl.
