Following on from the DIY mania I experienced over Christmas, I thought it would be grand to create my own Olympia Le-Tan style clutch as a gift for my mother. What do you buy for the woman who has everything? Nothing, is what. Nothing apart from a few craft materials, a book and some fabric, that is. Normally i’d trawl through Net a Porter and pick out something fairly unimaginative like a bikini or a some earrings but mediocrity wasn’t an option this year. My mother is an unbelievable woman. She’s had six children, is pregnant with her seventh and she still looks like a supermodel. With this in mind, it could only be the best for the best. I only hope she’s been good enough to pass on those fabulous genes to her first born!
I love my Olympia Le-Tan bag but their eye watering price tags are a wind up considering I can barely fit car keys into it. I think the manageable glue high I endured whilst making my own was well worth it and it allows you to choose your own book title. This project looks a lot easier than it is but don’t let that put you off. This was an incredibly satisfying thing to finish and my mum lost her s*** when she received it. I really like the way some of the page edges inside are a little rough and a few words are visible. I think it’s a lot more charming when the inexperienced and crude hand of the gift donor can be seen and I was able to pick out her favourite childhood novel. I don’t think it matters how old you get, handmade presents really do mean more.
