I’ve always liked the idea of being an edgy individual. You know, tattoos or some sort of piercing to add a little exterior flava to my personality. Remember the film ‘Thirteen?’ I really wanted to be Nicky Reid. Sadly for me, i’m about as hardcore as Disney on Ice and up until recently I hadn’t done anything remotely funky to my appearance because it would look ridiculous and my dad would probably think I was taking drugs. Even though i’m a little late to the party, I think that a few pieces of coloured hair can look really great on the right person – i’m thinking Kate Bosworth with her dip dyed blue tips as opposed to a milkshake pink Lily Allen. The problem arises for those, like me, with dark hair. You need to bleach the hell out of it for the colour to look punchy and then you’re left with tresses that resemble a sun scorched Weetabix only for the colour to fade after a week.
I came across Colour Smash in the Selfridges beauty hall recently and thought i’d give them a whirl. All you do is rub small sections of hair over the chalky powder, spritz with a little hairspray and you’re good to go. It stays put until you wash it out so you can flirt with your inner bad ass in a totally non committal way. I really recommend using the Moroccan Oil hairspray with this product as it has a very light consistency and isn’t too sticky. The best colours I found were ‘Je Ne Sais Quoi’ on top of ‘Ooh La Lavender’ but there are some deep bronze tones and glitter varieties to choose from as well. I’ve added a really upbeat demonstration video I found on Youtube so you can fully appreciate how simple (if a little messy) it is to apply.
Available here at Selfridges.
